Often new discoveries are met with criticism due to the resistance of change. Many times, we are all uncomfortable operating in this adversarial framework. However, I was rewarded with phenomenal results which encouraged me to keep thinking outside the box.
Thinking out of the box... that is what Speech and Motion is all about. The philosophy is to focus on the child’s strengths, asking positive whys, and implementing these strengths within the student’s every day curriculum. When we focus on our strengths, we all perform at higher accuracy levels, with greater motivation and ease of execution. The older we get, the more we move toward our strengths and away from our weaknesses. Children in education are no different.
An integral part in my approach is addressing the needs of the parent and the family. Parents become overwhelmed with fear when they are routinely reminded of what is wrong, instead of how to fix it. Anxiety elevates when the weaknesses seem to outweigh the strengths. In today’s special educational system, children are labeled and grouped by these faults and academic weaknesses. Not at Speech & Motion! We emphasize the strengths, provide the tools and resources to assist the child as well as the parents and family.
